The Indian Premier League was first started in 2008, and within a very short time, it established a strong position across the world. Today, this tournament has become one of the most profitable cricket leagues globally and is considered the highest revenue-generating cricket tournament in the world.

The Indian Premier League 2026 (19th season) will be played from March 28 to May 31, 2026.

The Indian Premier League format is as follows:

1. There are a total of 10 teams in the tournament. They play in a double round-robin format, where each team plays against every other team twice. One match is played at their home ground, and the other match is played at the opponent’s home ground.

2. In the Indian Premier League points table, the top 4 teams qualify for the playoffs. The top 2 teams play against each other in Qualifier 1, and the team that wins this match directly reaches the final.

3. In the Indian Premier League points table, the teams in third and fourth position play against each other in the Eliminator. The winner of this match advances to Qualifier 2, where they face the team that lost in Qualifier 1. The winner of this match then secures a place in the final.

Where is the IPL being played?

1. The Indian Premier League is played across different cities in India, mainly in the home cities of each franchise. However, some teams choose to host one or more of their matches in other cities as well.

2. In the Indian Premier League 2026 season, a total of 70 league matches will be played, and these matches will take place across 13 different stadiums.

3. The opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which is the home ground of the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

4. The other venues are Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, MA ​Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, and Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
