A draft MoU for a 60-day ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran has reportedly been prepared, and it now only awaits the signature of US President Donald Trump. Once signed, the 60-day ceasefire between the two countries could begin again, helping ensure that the ongoing talks between the US and Iran continue without any major issues.
After the ceasefire, the United States and Iran could hold discussions on several important issues.
The ceasefire talks have sent a positive signal to the markets, leading to a drop in international Brent crude prices to around $92.54 per barrel, while Asian stock markets such as Seoul and Tokyo witnessed a strong rally.
These are some of the key points that both countries could discuss Strait of Hormuz, Nuclear Conditions, Economic Relief, Regional Stability
Talks between the two countries are considered likely on these four key points, but it remains to be seen whether any agreement can be reached on them within the 60-day period.
In this war, the world’s biggest focus is on the Strait of Hormuz because nearly 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply passes through this route. Iran has imposed restrictions on the route, and only some ships are reportedly being allowed to pass with permission.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the most important and sensitive point in the ceasefire talks. Since the start of the war between the United States and Iran, shipping traffic through the route has been heavily disrupted because no ship can pass through without Iran’s permission. The main objective now is to ensure that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz resumes smoothly and without any obstacles.
Iran is reportedly charging toll taxes for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, and discussions could take place on putting a stop to these charges.
The main reason behind this war is Iran’s nuclear program. The conflict between the United States and Iran reportedly began over Iran’s efforts to become a nuclear power. Iran wants to strengthen its nuclear capabilities, while the United States does not want Iran to possess nuclear weapons or develop a nuclear bomb.
Talks on this issue are expected during the 60-day ceasefire, as the United States wants Iran to give a commitment that it will not develop nuclear weapons.
Another important point in the talks is Iran’s stockpile of around 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity. The United States reportedly wants this uranium to either be destroyed or transferred to a third country, such as Russia, to reduce concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran, and Iran wants discussions on these sanctions along with economic relief for the country.
At present, the United States has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, due to which ships are reportedly unable to freely enter or leave Iran. Iran wants these restrictions to be proportionally lifted as part of the ongoing discussions.
Due to US sanctions on Iran, the country is unable to freely sell oil in the international market. Discussions could also take place on removing or easing these sanctions as part of the ongoing talks between the two countries.
The United States has frozen several Iranian assets, and Iran wants discussions on releasing these frozen assets as part of the ongoing negotiations.
Since the war between the United States and Iran began, instability has increased across the Middle East. Iran has reportedly carried out missile attacks in several countries in the region, leading to growing tensions. The United States also wants Iran to end its proxy activities linked to groups such as Hezbollah, and this is expected to be one of the major points of discussion between the two countries.
