It is not very often a player transforms their career on its head as drastically as Abhishek Sharma.
India's left-handed opener and off-spin support spinner born on September 4, 2000, in Amritsar, Punjab, has grown from an exciting domestic cricketer into an undeniable T20 batting talent feared by any bowler from around the globe.
Sharma's career would also bloom from a very young age; only a few weeks before his India U-19 team went on to win the World Cup in New Zealand, at just 17, he had been picked by Delhi Daredevils in the IPL auctions of 2018.
It was an explosive debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore, suggesting the big-hitting which would follow. After one season in Delhi, he was transferred to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2019, where he has played for each season ever since.
The real shift in his career came with SRH promoting him to opener for the first time in 2022, rewarding the faith with a productive year and, with Travis Head at the top order for the 2024 season, smashing records of all types to lead SRH to their first final since 2018.
His international cricket calling came in July 2024, his T20I debut, a dominant one against Zimbabwe, and since then Sharma would not look back and is now a cemented Indian first-choice opener in T20s, adorned in the #4 Indian T20 jersey in an ultra-aggressive, not necessarily slow style.
In 2025 & 2026 alone, he had had the best part of his international career to date. In the Asia Cup he got 314 from 7 matches, averaging around 45 with a strike rate of around 200, which saw him clinch Player of the Tournament honors and also raise his T20I rating to 931 in his career, which saw the duo of Smriti Mandhana being crowned the ICC Women's & Men's players of the month alongside Sharma.
Sharma's consistency continued into the T20 World Cup 2026 (co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka) despite a minor scare of getting diagnosed with a stomach infection (after being admitted to a hospital, which led to missing their group match against Namibia but getting declared fit in time for their high-stakes game against Pakistan in Colombo, which eventually saw captain Suryakumar Yadav claim he was fine and fit to play) when India went on to clinch the T20 World Cup along with the T20 Asia Cup he previously won in 2025.
All through formats, Sharma's figures show him turning into a quality batting all-rounder. With a total of 1,554 in 50 matches at an average of 33.8, with two hundred and eleven half centuries topped by 135 in T20i.
Sharma has racked up 2,379 runs in the IPL with a strike rate developed for the powerplay and 2 hundreds along with useful wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin at an average of List A: 25.66 and T20: 22.44 with best figures of 4 for 56.
This presence on the Indian cricket circuit continues despite his absence on the international stage for quite a while.
He is expected to carry on as the skipper of the Amritsar Soormas, their franchise in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League in Mohali in September 2026, which features India teammates Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh.
He kicked off this competition by scoring 25 runs in one over, along with an iconic contest with his India mate Gill, where he took him on 67 chasing 192, with a game-changing wicket taken at the perfect moment.
