Australia’s touring team will be facing Zimbabwe in an ODI series comprising three matches, which will start on September 15, 2026, and end on September 20, 2026, and will be held at the Harare Sports Club.
Moreover, the series is remarkable because this is the first bilateral ODI series that Zimbabwe has hosted since Australia had left a decade back, and after that, Zimbabwe had hosted Australia for the last time in a triangular series in 2014.
For both teams, the series will act as a preparatory event for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in 2027, where Zimbabwe, along with South Africa and Namibia, will host the ODI World Cup.
All three matches are arranged to take place at the same venue that is Harare Sports Club with the same timing of 9:30 am (5:30 pm AEST) local time.
The Australian team has included a strong side, despite the absence of their regular captain Pat Cummins and top performer Mitchell Starc, who are staying back due to their busy cricket schedule ahead.
Mitchell Marsh will lead the team in the absence of Pat Cummins, with Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, and Alex Carey forming part of their batting strength, and Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa forming the bowlers' strength.
Moreover, Australia has also made inclusion of young players like Cooper Connolly, Joel Davies, and Oliver Peake, indicating their efforts in building depth for the future.
However, Zimbabwe have named Sikandar Raza as their acting captain due to their usual T20I captain Richard Ngarava being unavailable owing to a back injury.
The hosts' squad has some veterans, including Brendan Taylor and Graeme Cremer, and also include Craig Ervine, Blessing Muzarabani, and Ryan Burl, among others.
The visitors come to this series with some form, having recently won against Bangladesh in an ODI series by a margin of 2-1, while they will also be riding on the success from their unexpected victory against Australia in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, where they shocked the Aussies with a victory by 23 runs.
All the same, the numbers of history are very much in the favor of the tourists, who have won almost all of the ODIs held against each other, and no one expects any major change in this trend regardless of the home comforts enjoyed by Zimbabwe recently.
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first at Harare Sports Club. Mitchell Marsh made the opening strike with an explosive 36 runs off 28 deliveries that included six fours and a six but fell victim to Newman Nyamhuri behind the stumps.
Cooper Connolly followed that with a solid 50-run knock and kept building on the momentum along with Josh Inglis. Australia found themselves in the position of 135 for 4 at the halfway mark of their innings after around 23 overs.
Apart from the outcome itself, the entire series holds importance for both countries.
For Australia, the series provides an opportunity to experiment with new players and try new combinations before entering a tough schedule of games in Africa, which includes the upcoming Test series against South Africa.
For Zimbabwe, having an opportunity to face a full-strength team from Australia means testing themselves against the current ODI World Champions and boosting their confidence ahead of jointly hosting the World Cup in 2027.
