veryone's obsessed with two questions right now: will AI run out of electricity, or will it run out of memory chips first. Fair questions. But they're missing the one that's actually sneaking up on the industry. It's materials.
Plain old raw materials, the stuff nobody outside a chip fab thinks about until it isn't there anymore. And Jeff Bezos, through Bezos Expeditions, just wrote a check toward fixing it.
The company getting the money is CuspAI, a Cambridge, UK startup that's only two years old. On July 20 it closed a $450 million Series B, and the valuation that came with it is honestly a little wild: $2.6 billion.
Nine months earlier the company was worth about $520 million. Do the math and that's roughly a five-fold jump in under a year. Kleiner Perkins and NEA co-led the round. Bezos Expeditions joined in, and so did AMD Ventures and the UK's own Sovereign AI Venture Fund, plus a long list of others (Lux Capital, Temasek, John Doerr ) that reads like a who's-who of people who don't miss.
Here's where it stops being just another funding headline. CuspAI isn't chasing chatbots or coding tools like half the AI world right now. It built something called MIRA, which is basically a search engine for physical materials.
Feed it the properties you need, and it screens candidate compounds that would otherwise take a human research team years of lab work to sort through.
Why does that matter? Because chipmaking depends on a short list of exotic elements that are getting harder to source.
Gallium. Iridium. Ruthenium. Tantalum. Names most people have never heard, but they're the quiet plumbing behind every advanced chip on the market. The International Energy Agency has projected data center demand for gallium could outrun supply by around 10% by 2030. And China controls something close to 99% of the world's refined gallium. Sit with that number for a second.
CuspAI's CEO, Chad Edwards, didn't dress it up when describing his customers' mood. Chipmakers, he said, are "frantically searching for new materials." That's not marketing spin. That's what you say when your phone won't stop ringing.
Alongside the funding, CuspAI rolled out something called the AI Materials Foundry, and this is honestly the bigger story. It's a coalition of more than 45 partners, and the roster isn't small names. Nvidia. Meta's AI research team. Samsung. Hyundai Motor Group. Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, Lam Research.
These aren't companies writing checks and walking away. They're pooling compute and lab data so materials get tested and verified faster than any single one of them could pull off alone.
Kleiner Perkins partner Josh Coyne kept his line short too: "CuspAI built a search engine that changes that."
Worth asking why Nvidia and Meta specifically care. Both sit near the center of the AI hardware world, and both have obvious reasons to want the materials pipeline sorted before it becomes their problem. Samsung and Hyundai being in the mix says something else, too: this isn't purely a chip story anymore. Manufacturing, batteries, industrial materials, it's all tangled up in the same bet.
No. Not directly, anyway. CuspAI is still private, and there's no IPO talk floating around yet. If you're a retail investor hoping to get a slice of this specific company, you're out of luck for now.
What you can do is watch the public names attached to it. Nvidia and Meta both have real upside if CuspAI's platform starts delivering usable materials at scale, so their stock stories are, in a sense, now tied to how this plays out. And this isn't Bezos's first quiet move into the unglamorous end of the AI supply chain either.
He backed Prometheus, a manufacturing startup, back in November. One data point isn't a pattern. Two starts to look like one.
Keep an eye on the Foundry's member list too. It's only grown since launch, and every new name added is really just another company admitting it's nervous about where its materials come from. That's the thing worth tracking here. Not the ticker.
