A short video posted on X on November 2 has pulled Conformity Gate out of semi-retirement.
The clip, shared by the fan account Stranger Things Updates, reportedly shows Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin filming something in Chicago. Both are wearing clothes that look a lot like what Mike and Lucas wore on the show. Nobody has said what the shoot is for.
That gap got filled fast.
Replies under the post split into two camps. One group guessed it was an advert. The other group wanted it to be the real thing. Some asked whether the crew was looking for Eleven, others called it the "real" ending, and one commenter simply begged for a sixth season.
It is easy to see why the clip landed. Stranger Things has been off the air for ten months, and the fanbase has not entirely moved on.
The final episode arrived on New Year's Eve 2025, on Netflix and in select theaters. Season 5 had been released in three parts. Part one did well. Part two drew heavy criticism, and the finale split viewers even further.
Within days, fans on TikTok and X settled on an alternative reading. Conformity Gate argues that the long epilogue was an illusion built by Vecna, that he survived, and that a hidden ninth episode would show what actually happened. Some pinned it to January 7. Nothing arrived on that date, or any other.
The theory faded after that, though it never fully disappeared. Several cast members joked about it publicly, which helped drain some of the energy. Now there is a new video, and the energy is back.
Wolfhard and McLaughlin in costume does not point to new episodes. It points to marketing, and there is a long list of things Netflix could be selling.
The most obvious candidate is Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The stage prequel, set in 1959 Hawkins and centered on Henry Creel, opened in London's West End in December 2023 and reached Broadway in April 2025. Netflix filmed it in February with the Broadway cast, cancelling a week of performances to do it. As of the latest reporting, the company has not announced a release date. One report sourced to a fan account claims 2027, but that remains unconfirmed.
Then there is the animated spinoff Tales From '85, plus the Stranger Things experiences at Netflix House. And Stranger Things Day is November 6, which is today. Companies love a date like that. A costumed ad for any of these would look exactly like the video fans are dissecting.
Matt and Ross Duffer were asked about hidden-episode theories on January 5 by the UK outlet Capital Buzz. Around the same time, they said the connection between Vecna and the Abyss has been cut, so he can no longer reach his victims. Outlets including NBC News and SlashFilm noted that there was no indication of a secret episode, and that the brothers have consistently described the finale as the end.
The Duffers did tease a spinoff in a January 1 interview with Variety. That is a different thing from a hidden ninth episode.
A Netflix documentary on the making of the show gave critics another angle. According to coverage from TVLine and ComingSoon, it showed the brothers still writing the finale script after filming had already begun. That is hard to square with a master plan involving a secret second ending.
Not everyone on the cast has swatted the idea away. Linnea Berthelsen, who played Kali, told Parade she was not surprised people were still debating the ending. She did not confirm anything. Her point was that real answers sit with the Duffers.
For now, a costume and a camera are all anyone has. Netflix has not announced new Stranger Things episodes, and the company tends to reveal projects through its own channels rather than through street footage. If an official reveal does come, Stranger Things Day is the first obvious date on the calendar.
Until then, the safest reading of the Chicago video is the dullest one.
