The video

Swank shared the news in an Instagram video showing the couple and their twins dancing in the dark with glow sticks attached to their bodies. Partway through, the camera catches her growing belly. A tiny baby shape is outlined in glow sticks inside it.

The caption is the part people will quote. Swank wrote that many people had been asking what project she's doing next, and that this one releases in December. It's a joke about work, and it's also the closest thing to a due date she has offered. She never says “due.” ABC News, which reported the story on October 14, describes the caption as appearing to hint at timing. Until she says otherwise, December is a reading of a caption, not a confirmed date.

Not her first big announcement

This is the second time Swank has made a pregnancy public, and the first time was a very different production. In October 2022, she told Good Morning America she was going to be a mom, “and not just of one, but of two.” She was in her second trimester by then, and she said her colleagues on the set of “Alaska Daily” hadn’t known until that morning.

A Spanish-language outlet reported that she’d hidden it by altering trousers that no longer fit and layering a jacket over them. She also posted bump photos along the way, including ones over Halloween and Christmas.

The twins arrived the following spring. Swank posted a photo of herself holding two newborns and wrote that it wasn’t easy, but “boy (and girl!) was it worth it.” She was 48. They’re 3 now, so the dates add up.

Where the coverage disagrees

None of these conflicts is large, but they’re worth flagging, because celebrity timelines get copied from outlet to outlet without anyone checking them.

When the twins’ birth was posted.

Fox’s local stations ran the story saying Swank shared the news late Sunday. CNN’s version has her posting on Monday. The caption included an Easter greeting, and Easter fell on Sunday, April 9, 2023, so a Sunday-night post fits better.

Time zones could account for the gap, since a post made late on a U.S. Sunday can land on Monday elsewhere. The coverage doesn’t settle it, and ABC says only “April 2023.”

How long she and Schneider were together before marrying.

Marie Claire, citing Us Weekly, reported that they met around 2014 and married secretly in August 2018. CNN said they began dating in 2016. PA Media wrote that she married him after less than two years of dating. The 2016 start is better supported, since several outlets agree on it and it fits the “less than two years” description.

The 2014 date may refer to when they first met rather than when they started dating, but that’s an inference, not something any of the outlets says.
Whose family twins run in. One report said twins run in Schneider’s family.

Entertainment Tonight’s account says they run in both families. Neither report is wrong on its face. They may simply reflect how much Swank said in different interviews.

What she’s said about becoming a mother

Swank has been open about starting a family later in life, and she hasn’t always had an easy audience. Romper reported that she faced online trolls over having a baby at 48 and that friends like Emmy Rossum pushed back.

In an interview with Extra, she said she’d thought about motherhood even as a young girl.

She’s also spoken about the physical side of it. Last year she told Women’s Health that for her, it isn’t about bouncing back to pre-baby bodies but about “bouncing forward.” That interview was about her body after the twins, so it’s a stretch to read it as a statement about this pregnancy. It does show how she tends to talk about the subject: practical, a little wry, and without much apology.

What we don’t know

A lot is still blank. Swank hasn’t given a due date, so “December” rests on a caption. She hasn’t said whether the baby is a boy or a girl. None of the coverage includes a statement from her representatives, and nothing indicates how the pregnancy has gone so far.

For this pregnancy, everything above comes from one Instagram post and ABC News’s description of it. The details of the glow-stick sequence are secondhand, and the video should be viewed before publishing.

The earlier history is better documented because it ran through several interviews and outlets over several months.

This announcement is a single post, and that difference matters when deciding how much to read into it.

Swank hasn’t posted anything further about the pregnancy.
