The polling for Delhi University Students' Union Election 2026 came to an end on Saturday.
Yash Dabas from ABVP came out as the winner in the election for the position of President by securing 24,576 votes, surpassing his nearest competitor by 2,053 votes.
Riya Chhawdi from ABVP was elected as the Secretary, while Lakshya Raj Singh got elected as Joint Secretary after defeating Deepanshu Kumar from NSUI and others.
Thus, ABVP bagged three out of four positions in the central panel.
Vince the Maximum Number of Votes Independently Deepanshu Shokeen is the independent candidate who got the most votes for Vice President, i.e., 30615 votes. Deepanshu Shokeen is an independent candidate because he had not been able to win any ticket of NSUI.
With his victory, ABVP could not complete a clean sweep in all the four seats.
NSUI, which is supported by the Congress Party, could not win even one position among the four in the central panel this year.
It is indeed surprising because just two years back, in 2024, NSUI had won the presidency itself, with Rounak Khatri winning over ABVP's candidate Rishabh Chaudhary by 1,300-plus votes.
NSUI could not secure even one position in second place this year.
Voting was completed by Friday and took place in two rounds in 52 colleges that participated.
There are 91 colleges in Delhi University, located in the north and south campuses of the university, with an approximate distance of 15 km between them. However, students of only 52 colleges and faculties are eligible to participate in DUSU elections.
St Stephen's College, Lady Shri Ram College, and Jesus and Mary College are some of the notable colleges that do not even participate in DUSU elections.
There were twenty candidates contesting for four crucial positions this year.
Commenting after his success, Yash Dabas gave an explanation about this success in more general terms related to the view of young voters towards the politics of students.
He explained that this is the case of victory of "Gen Z" supporting the politics of ABVP.
The BJP leaders also commented on this result and congratulated "my all young friends from DU", saying that this is the case of victory reflecting "continued faith of youth in positive and constructive student politics, inspired by Nation First."
The recent DUSU elections saw a lot of security and minimal disturbances, which have characterised the previous years' elections.
It is in line with the trend seen in the previous year, 2025, where the counting of votes was stalled after a Delhi High Court order, owing to the damaged public property on the university premises being cleaned, involving the deployment of over 600 police personnel and CCTV surveillance and drone technology as preventive measures.
The ABVP dominance this year is part of a trend which has oscillated through recent election years.
ABVP won three of the four positions in 2023 and made Tushar Dedha the president. In 2025, ABVP once again won three positions, and Aryan Maan became the president, while NSUI had to settle with the vice president.
The only exception to this trend occurred in 2024, when NSUI once again became the president of the university for the first time since 2017.
