ineteen months. That's how long a piece of SpaceX hardware has been drifting around up there with absolutely nowhere to go. It did its job back in January 2025, let go of its cargo, and then just... stayed. Circling. Waiting for gravity to figure out what to do with it.
Gravity has figured it out. On August 5, at around 06:34 UTC, the spent Falcon 9 upper stage is going to slam into the Moon near Einstein Crater doing about 5,400 miles per hour. Seven times the speed of sound.
There's no mission control counting this one down, no press conference booked for it. It's just physics, quietly finishing something it started a year and a half ago.
Most rockets are only useful for a few minutes of their entire existence. Wild, when you think about it. This one, cataloged as 2025-010D, launched on January 15, 2025, carrying two lunar landers, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience, out toward the Moon.
Blue Ghost stuck the landing on March 2. Resilience didn't. It lost contact about 90 seconds before touchdown and crashed into the exact surface it was trying to reach.
The rocket stage that got them both there had already peeled away by then, and it had its own problem brewing. No fuel to head home. Not enough speed to escape into deep space either. So it just sat there, stuck in a messy, looping orbit, getting nudged around bit by bit by the Earth's gravity, the Moon's, the Sun's, even the faint push of sunlight itself. That's a real thing, by the way.
Sunlight can move a rocket. An astronomer named Bill Gray, who runs an orbit-tracking site called Project Pluto, saw this coming all the way back in September 2025. He's been right about it ever since.
This isn't some tiny scrap of debris, either. Worth saying out loud: it's roughly 40 feet long and weighs around 4,000 kilograms. More school bus than stray bolt. It just took a year and a half of falling, very, very slowly, to actually get there.
The impact lands on the Moon's near side, in daylight, which is the lucky part. Telescopes on Earth can actually watch this one land instead of finding out weeks later from a photo, which is normally how this works.
Benjamin Fernando, a planetary scientist coordinating the observation effort, has been rallying anyone with a decent camera, professionals and hobbyists alike, to point it at Einstein Crater that morning.
The stage is mostly hollow inside, so don't picture some deep gouge. It's going to crush more than punch, throwing up a bright flash and a plume of dust that could climb several kilometers.
Estimates on the crater itself are a little fuzzy.
Somewhere between 20 and 30 meters wide, depending on whose model you believe, with a depth of a few meters. The energy released is roughly comparable to three tons of TNT. Small, in the grand scheme of things. But rare, genuinely rare, because scientists almost never get an artificial impact where they already know the mass, the speed, and the exact minute it's going to happen.
Only one other uncontrolled rocket has ever hit the Moon, as far as anyone knows. A Chinese booster did it in 2022, leaving a strange double crater on the far side, and nobody even clocked it had happened until the photos came back months later.
This time's different. There's a countdown. A location circled on a map. That almost never happens with space junk.
Underneath all the excitement sits a question that's a lot less fun to answer. The Moon doesn't have anything close to the environmental rules or liability laws that apply on Earth. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, signed by 138 countries, says no nation can claim the Moon as its own. It says almost nothing about who's responsible when a piece of hardware falls out of the sky and hits it by accident.
On paper, the United States carries some responsibility here, since it's supposed to oversee what its space companies do. Whether that actually means anything when it's put to the test? Nobody knows yet. It hasn't been tested.
There are working groups at the UN poking at this, slowly. But there's no real rulebook. And more lunar missions are coming, from more countries and more companies, which means more hardware left behind to drift until gravity decides where it lands next. August 5 is going to answer a lot of interesting scientific questions about how the Moon reacts to a hit like this.
It's not going to answer that one.
