A Comeback Few Saw Coming

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the 36-year-old right arm swing bowler hailing from Meerut, has been appointed as the captain of India's seven-player team for the Hong Kong Sixes 2026, which is set to take place from October 30 to November 1, 2026.

This announcement made on October 5, 2026, triggered an outpouring of reactions from social media platforms, where followers showed shock, nostalgia, and some even showed disappointment in their reactions about a player of such calibre making a comeback in Indian colors in a sixes tournament and not a bilateral series. This appointment is a significant one for a bowler who had failed to make the cut in recent Indian international teams.

The team, which also consists of Krunal Pandya, Shashank Singh, Rahul Tewatia, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi, and T. Natarajan, will represent India in Pool C along with Pakistan and the UAE. Out of all the players in the squad, Shashank Singh is the only one who hasn't played for India internationally in the senior category.

The Long Career on the International Field

The path that Kumar followed up until now has been quite long in the context of Indian cricket. In fact, he made his debut on the international scene in late 2012 in T20I and ODI games against Pakistan.

Then he played 21 Tests, 121 ODIs, and 87 T20Is before retiring from international cricket after playing 229 international matches. He shone the most in his performance during the tour of England in 2014, when he managed to take his best Test figures of 6 for 82 in Lord's and was named Player of the Series.

Kumar was a member of the team that won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and he took his 100th ODI wicket in early 2019 in a series against Australia. By June 2022, his standing in the team had improved so much that he became the vice-captain of India's T20I side.

However, with the passage of time, due to the emergence of a new set of fast bowlers from India, Kumar began to fall out of favor in India’s selection plans and has been an outsider in the national team scenario for quite some time now despite doing well in the franchise league.

Keeping Himself Relevant in the IPL

Whereas, as far as international cricket goes, he has not been able to keep himself relevant, he has been able to do so through the IPL league.

Kumar was bought for ₹4.20 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad in an earlier mega auction and then acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for ₹10.75 crore in the November 2024 auction.

The acquisition of Kumar by Royal Challengers Bengaluru turned out to be extremely fruitful for both parties, as he claimed 17 wickets in helping RCB clinch the IPL title in 2025 and then went on to claim even more wickets in 2026.

Kumar claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches, which was more than anyone else in the Bangalore team as the franchise went on to clinch the league phase, beat Gujarat Titans in the qualifier, and defeated the same team in the final.

That is how consistent excellence at the franchise level has been regarded as the base for getting back into the national colors, irrespective of the unorthodox manner of his comeback into the side.

Discipline, the Key to Success

The observations made by the player himself regarding his style of playing can give an indication that he is fully aware of the factors that keep him in good form to date. Talking about his style of bowling recently, Kumar highlighted that discipline was the key factor behind his longevity as a bowler, which comes out of the context that he has been playing all his life without depending on speed and fitness.

This has helped him remain relevant as one of the first choices for RCB despite being 36 years old and also seems to be the reason why selectors chose him as the captain of the side composed of IPL players for the Hong Kong Sixes tournament.

Tournament India Wants to Win This Time Around

The task assigned to Kumar in this assignment has its own challenges associated with it. In the previous instances of the Hong Kong Sixes, India has not been able to do well, as they have lost nine out of their ten games.

On the other hand, the defending champions of the tournament for 2026, Pakistan, won the Hong Kong Sixes last year by beating debutants Kuwait and securing their record sixth win in the tournament. The two teams will meet once again in Pool C along with UAE.

This makes things quite interesting for Kumar, who is now leading a side that comprises many international players from India as well as the all-round capabilities of Krunal Pandya, the aggressive top-order hitting of Nitish Rana, and the finishing abilities of Shashank Singh and Rahul Tewatia.
