Philadelphia Eagles veteran right tackle Lane Johnson, who is a two-time winner of Super Bowl rings, decided to end his NFL career in mid-season.
Johnson officially announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, which means that the veteran ends his 14-year-long career just four games after the start of the season.
It was surprising for many people that Johnson left because it was announced only two days after the player was scratched from the team's line-up ahead of their game against the Los Angeles Rams due to some unclear "personal reasons."
Johnson said in his statement on social media that he had given everything to the sport during the last 14 years; he had worked himself to exhaustion each year trying to live up to the standard of the Eagles players and make a mark at his position. Although Lane Johnson wanted to really play one more season together with his mates, he had to leave the sport despite all his wishes.
Johnson had already intimated back in August that 2026 would be his last season, saying that it had become hard for him to leave his family in light of increasing responsibilities.
At the time, Johnson had indicated that his oldest child was going into his teens and some memories that one cannot revisit. Johnson also admitted that his mom had been ill, compounding the stresses of his last NFL season as well as his family life.
However, Johnson had claimed that talking about the things that mattered to him had enabled him to stay concentrated on playing football, as far as the near future is concerned, despite knowing that the writing was already on the wall in terms of the long run.
In its report of Johnson's retirement, ESPN indicated that the decision by the player was in part informed by the need to focus on his mental health needs. This information gives more context to a retirement that has up until now been portrayed as a surprising midseason move.
Johnson's résumé ranks him as one of the greatest offensive linemen of his generation.
The player was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the fourth pick in the 2013 NFL Draft from Oklahoma. Johnson has appeared in six Pro Bowls and been named All-Pro twice, playing in an offensive line, which is key for two Super Bowl victories for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 and 2024 seasons.
Besides, the player contributed to reaching three NFC Championship Games with the Philadelphia team.
Among the Eagles' offensive linemen, Jason Peters and Jason Kelce, who played alongside Johnson, are the only players to make more Pro Bowls than Johnson himself, which highlights the durability and consistency of the player in his position.
In turn, Jeffrey Lurie, the chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, described Johnson as an all-time Eagle and one of the best players to ever play in his position in the NFL.
Former teammate of Jason Kelce also issued statements regarding his ex-teammate.
The sudden departure of Johnson makes the situation of the offensive line in the Eagles team very delicate.
The offensive line of the team was facing injury problems during the early part of the 2026 season, and the retirement of Johnson leaves the line without its most experienced member at a very crucial time.
Markel Bell, who replaced Johnson in the last game played by the Eagles, is still a rookie and was left to perform the task of playing as a starter in an offense line that already had problems.
Dan Orlovsky from ESPN said that it is a great loss to the Eagles team, whereas Rex Ryan expressed his opinion about the condition of the offensive line of Philadelphia after the retirement of Johnson.
