A sudden loss on a Friday afternoon

It happened in the comfort of his own home on an ordinary day. As per the reports, Sanjay Gupta slipped and hit his head in his kitchen in Mumbai around 2:30 pm on Friday, October 30.

Sanjay Gupta, the renowned Indian film director and producer whose crime thrillers made an impact on a generation of Hindi action films, died because of the mishap. He was 57 years of age.

Film maker Milap Zaveri, a close friend of Sanjay Gupta, told PTI that he had slipped and hurt his head.

What police have said

The events seem to have happened in an accident. A case of accidental death has been reported by the police without any indication of foul play at first sight.

There is nothing about the funeral arrangements in the press releases available for review. No information about his medical care was included either.

His age of 59 years is mentioned in one headline on a link to India TV. However, according to the article, he is 57 years old.

The industry reacts

Tributes were pouring in from social media almost instantly. Movie director Ashoke Pandit expressed shock at the news, saying, "Yet another talented person leaving us too early."

Actor Anupam Kher said, "Woke up in Stockholm to heartbreaking news," in reference to the passing away of his director and friend.

Some other celebrities have also expressed their grief through social media messages. Tusshar Kapoor described him as his beloved director, while Kunal Kohli and Kamaal R Khan have written tributes paying homage to the broad knowledge of Gupta.

The film that defined him: Kaante

Gupta is, for most people, associated with only one film. Kaante is a Hindi crime thriller movie that came out on 20th December, 2002, and collected roughly ₹430 million all over the world.

It was based on a stellar cast. The movie included Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali, and Kumar Gaurav.

There were very obvious influences behind the film. It was heavily influenced by the works of Quentin Tarantino, and the filmmaker himself considers it his favourite among many of its kinds.

A filmography built on crime and style

Kaante was not a one-off. Some of Gupta’s movies include Kaabil, Zinda, Musafir, and Shootout at Wadala; he was also the director of Shootout at Lokhandwala.

Some of the big names that he has worked with include Sanjay Dutt, Aishwarya Rai, and Hrithik Roshan.

There have been more hits than misses in his later years as well. His 2015 film Jazbaa was followed by Kaabil in 2017 (produced by Rakesh Roshan), and his last movie was The Miranda Brothers in 2024.

Where he began

The career of Gupta lasted three decades and began with him serving as a production hand. As a production assistant, he collaborated with director Pankaj Parashar for several films, such as Karamchand and Jalwa.

This phase contributed towards shaping his unique style of making movies. His works included quick editing, strong dialogues, and ensemble casting.

In most cases, his movies were adored by fans but not the critics.

A legacy in the language of the genre

What is remarkable is the degree of influence that Gupta had in this genre. He was the one who added a refined touch to Hindi crime films during a phase in which the new style of narration was being experimented with by Bollywood.

These accounts confirm that he was highly respected even by his fellow workers as well. They describe him as a man who was eager, well-informed, and always ready to spend time with others.
