Sunday was bound to be a hectic day for the Delhi traffic. Well, now it is handling two important activities at one time.
The Delhi Traffic Police have come out with a notice to the citizens about the cricket match between India and Afghanistan in the T20 format in the Arun Jaitley Stadium on September 13 and have declared that there will be restrictions, diversion, and parking norms applicable at the venue of the game post 1400 hours.
This was no mere chance occurrence; there were reasons behind this decision because of the BRICS summit being held in the city.
The restrictions were announced formally by Delhi Police on the platform of X, providing commuters sufficient time for preparation.
"Considering the India-Afghanistan T20 cricket match at Arun Jaitley Stadium on 13.09.2026, there would be traffic, diversions, and parking restrictions in and around the stadium premises after 1400 hrs." Delhi Traffic Police informed.
As per the start of the match at 7 PM, it provides them sufficient time before the first ball of the match.
Along with warning about these measures, the police authorities gave some practical advice to all those who would travel around the venue of the match.
"'People should plan their journey in advance, avoid unnecessary travel within the match venue area, and utilize alternate routes and traffic personnel directions,' the advisory warned. Motorists were asked to be 'patient, follow traffic regulations, and assist traffic personnel deployed in the area.'"
It is noteworthy that the Delhi Metro system is advised to be used wherever possible. Emergency vehicles will be given a priority during the restrictions.
The extent of traffic control for Sunday is a result of two significant meetings taking place at the same time in the same city.
This traffic advisory comes at a time when the BRICS Summit is going on in New Delhi, and with the BRICS Leaders' Summit taking place, the capital has been seeing many restrictions and diversions due to the same.
However, beyond this traffic-related logistical issue, there is actual cricketing significance to the clash on Sunday, as it is going to kick off a three-game series.
As per the confirmation from the Afghan Cricket Board, they are going to play a three-game T20I series against India, and all three games are going to be held in the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, with the first game taking place on September 13 and then the other two on September 15 and 17.
In addition, this is the first time when Afghanistan's Men in Blue will be "hosted" in India for a bilateral series against India.
