t is the end of June, 2026, and Europe is suffering. An immense heat wall has engulfed the continent, staying put and bringing record highs of temperature to the land. The streets are deserted in the middle of the day. Schools are closed. Tourist sites are locked for visitors. And people are dying.
This is no ordinary summer heat wave. Researchers from World Weather Attribution – an international group of scientists that investigates how climate change affects extreme weather events – have dubbed it the most extreme heat wave ever observed in Europe. And their opinion is unambiguous: climate change induced by humans had made this kind of temperature practically unimaginable 50 years ago.
Heat began around mid-May and escalated into June. As soon as June 17th, just a few days before summer solstice, another heatwave began. This heatwave was even more powerful compared to the last one, with records broken in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
The heatwave reached its peak in France and broke its own record on the next day, becoming the hottest day in the history of France. The heat wave reached its peak in the United Kingdom and broke its own record on the next day, becoming the highest June temperature ever recorded in the country.
The two highest June temperatures were successively recorded in Spain. The highest June temperature was recorded in Switzerland on a Thursday. The temperature in Spain reached 45.1°C (113.2°F) in Andújar, the southern part of the country.

They are living beings who have died, and unfortunately enough, many have succumbed to death due to this heat wave.
In Spain, there were 212 confirmed deaths due to the heat wave. Five people died in Italy. In France, there were three elderly people who died due to the heat wave in the Bordeaux region, whereas two young children died in a hot car in southern France. At least 55 people died due to drowning in France within a week in the search for cooling from the river and canal.
The cardiac arrest cases in Paris were recorded to be 44 in a single day, which is way higher than 10 in normal days, whereas heat-related admissions in hospitals quadrupled.
Life had come to a halt. The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum had been shut down early due to the heat wave. All schools in the nation were closed. In Sweden, the heat had affected the railways, causing derailment of trains due to the distortion of metal railways. Electricity charges in Belgium went beyond €1 per kilowatt-hour.
Europe was never made for this.
Less than 20 percent of houses in Europe have air conditioning. In the northern nations, old houses were designed in such a way that they would keep the warm air in during the winter months. Thick walls, tiny windows, thick insulation—all of these became life-threatening traps as the mercury level surpassed 40°C.
The root cause of this specific heatwave lies in what meteorologists call the "Omega Block" or "Omega High Pressure System." This system has become a cover of sorts over the European continent; it stops dry air from the Sahara Desert from moving. The effect is a heat dome forming with no place to go.
"I think we've adapted absolutely everything—and I mean everything—for a climate that we are waving goodbye to pretty rapidly," warns Dr. Peter Thorne, director of the ICARUS Climate Research Centre at Maynooth University, Ireland.

It’s not a matter of bad luck either. The scientific evidence proves otherwise.
The scientists have calculated that in case this type of weather system were to occur in 1976, the temperature in Europe would be around 3.5 degrees Celsius lower. To our mind, it may not seem like a lot, but for the person who is close to their threshold, 3.5 degrees may decide whether they live or die.
"The temperature in Europe is rising quicker than anywhere else on the planet, making the heat wave more likely," commented one scientist working on the climate issue. "No time to waste."
Europe is the fastest-warming continent on Earth, and heat waves of this sort will become more common and severe if people don’t stop burning fossils sooner.
Europe is currently experiencing extreme heat. While the region is typically known for its cool climate, temperatures there have soared—with some countries, such as France and Poland, facing heat levels even more intense than those in India.
