On Friday, May 15, 2026, the government took a major decision and increased the prices of petrol and diesel by ₹3 each.
Along with this, the government has also increased the price of CNG by ₹3.
Earlier, the price of petrol was ₹94.77 per litre, but now it has increased to ₹97.77 per litre. Similarly, diesel was earlier priced at ₹87.67 per litre, which has now risen to ₹90.67 per liter.
These prices are for New Delhi.
If we talk about metro cities across the country, petrol prices will vary in each city. In Mumbai, petrol will now cost ₹106.68 per liter; in Kolkata, it has reached ₹108.74 per liter; and in Chennai, petrol will now be available at ₹103.67 per liter.
On the other hand, diesel prices also vary from city to city. In Mumbai, diesel costs ₹93.14 per liter, while in Kolkata it is ₹95.13 per liter, and in Chennai, diesel is available at ₹95.25 per liter.
Since the conflict between Iran and the United States began, petrol and diesel prices have increased sharply around the world. However, this is the first time India has raised petrol and diesel prices during this period.

Senior Indian National Congress leader and Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote on X that…
“For years, when international oil prices were low or falling, the Indian National Congress consistently demanded that the benefit be passed on to Indian consumers and that domestic prices of gas, petrol, and diesel be reduced. But this did not happen, and consumers were exploited.
Now, as international oil prices are rising due to the war unleashed in West Asia by the Prime Minister’s close friends — America and Israel — and with the Assembly elections now over, the Modi government, after first increasing the prices of commercial LPG, has now also raised the prices of petrol and diesel. This is certain to further increase inflation, which is now estimated to reach around 6% in this financial year. Growth rate projections are also expected to decline significantly.

If we talk about the entire world, petrol and diesel prices are currently the highest in Hong Kong. According to the latest rates, petrol is priced at around $4.13 per litre (approximately ₹395 per litre), while diesel costs around ₹300–₹350 per litre.
In India, the highest petrol prices are currently in Hyderabad, where petrol is priced at ₹110.89 per litre, while diesel is being sold at ₹98.96 per litre.
Notably, Hyderabad is in the state of Telangana, where the government is led by the Indian National Congress.
The highest diesel price in India is currently in Thiruvananthapuram, where it has reached ₹99.63 per litre.
