By early Thursday morning on October 15, the first trailers of Jailer 2 were released, and the feedback online was enthusiastic. Great Andhra, at 7:32 am IST, said that the responses to the first half of the movie have been predominantly good.
The audience has complimented the interval block, a bridge scene and the tea shop scene. The movie is the sequel of Rajinikanth's blockbuster of 2023. Fans have been eagerly awaiting its release for months now.
These are feedback by movie-goers on social networking sites, and not professional critic reviews. They are mostly about the first half of the movie, and all are unverifiable.
Rajinikanth stars as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian who fights against an international syndicate. Nelson Dilipkumar directed the movie, which was produced by Sun Pictures.
In this movie, Pandian dreams of a quiet retirement but uses his deadly expertise after the emergence of a threatening international situation.
The movie features a large cast. S.J. Suryah and Ramya Krishnan star in this movie, along with cameo appearances by Mohanlal and Hrithik Roshan. S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, and Vidya Balan star as the rebel family in one viewer’s account.
The overall mood is optimistic, but not consistent. One viewer quoted by Great Andhra commented that the movie "starts off slow" until Nelson’s brand of comedy kicks in. This particular viewer said that it is a typical pattern.
Others, however, were enthusiastic about it. One viewer from the website All About Movies said that the black humor is extremely well-done, that Yogi Babu is hilarious "at his peak," and that "there isn’t even one boring moment."
Another viewer, Christopher Kanagaraj, said that he is liking it better than the first part of Jailer, but that it needs to earn its place in the second half.
This is crucial to take into account since the previous part got mixed reviews, which can be expressed by the comment from Gulf News: "First half great, second half okay."
It is the music, however, that ties all the early reviews together. Great Andhra says that Anirudh Ravichander's background music became a standout feature in the film and that his songs were a great fit for Rajinikanth's mass scenes.
One reviewer also mentioned that there was plenty of use of "Hukum." This song was intended to be a fan anthem for Rajinikanth in the first movie and was launched in July 2023.
The sequel did well to build on this strength. Its working title was "Hukum."
The buzz was seen even days before the film release. The movie got 4.25 out of 5 stars on its "First Ever Review" on October 9. But this rating needs to be looked at carefully since the report also stated that a comprehensive understanding of audience and critical reaction would be possible once the film hit theaters.
This rating also came from a social media account before the movie was released.
There were some audacious claims made regarding the release of the film as well. It was claimed to be the first Indian movie to have a simultaneous release in Japan alongside India. This information was obtained from a social media post reported by Asianet Newsable and could not be confirmed independently.
It was given the certificate of U/A 16+. There were some concerns with regards to the Hindi version. It was reported that there has been "no change" to the release date.
Kalanithi Maran is producing the movie through Sun Pictures. Nelson directed the movie.
The release dates of his movies happen to be festivals. In 2023, at the time of releasing the first movie, fans started queueing up very early. The distributor from UAE revealed that over 6,000 fans had purchased tickets for the screening at 4:30 am.
In Tamil Nadu, fans threw rose and jasmine flowers at the screen in all theaters. Some critics often joked that reviews cannot be done for his movies as was quoted by Gulf News in 2023.
