It happened near the city of Kumamoto in southwestern Japan. More than 50 people taken to a hospital in Hikawa Town and another 50 reported injured, at least one of whom is unconscious.
The most devastating effect occurred in the Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima Town that appears to have collapsed following an explosion with white smoke coming from the building.
Video footage indicates that the walls of the shopping mall appear to have exploded outward with the steel structure inside visible.
According to NHK in Japan reporting the police sources, around 20 to 30 people working in the mall disappeared after the collapse of the building.
The reports of the police from Kumamoto as reported by RKK, a local TV station, indicated worries about heavy casualties.
Four people conscious and rescued from the mall were admitted to hospital.
In addition to the shopping complex, the quake caused destruction in other areas as well. People are missing because a chimney collapsed at Nippon Paper Industries’ factory in Yatsushiro city, which was split into two by the collapsed chimney according to the aerial photographs.
In the city of Uki, the fire department received an increase in the number of emergency calls due to several fires that occurred in the city. Overpasses on the Kyushu Expressway in Yatsushiro were badly damaged. Videos show that there is a derailed cargo train, along with several other collapsed buildings near the epicenter.
The historic site of the 17th century Kumamoto Castle has been damaged as well, as it can be seen from the videos where a portion of its stone wall is collapsed.
Earthquake that occurred yesterday took place in a region that is haunted by the disaster that occurred there in April of 2016. Quakes in the area of Kumamoto caused the deaths of over 275 people, injured over 2,700 plus people, and destroyed thousands of buildings.
The sequence of the events started with the first earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude, and another earthquake followed some days after the first event.
It is a known fact that in Japan, about 1,500 earthquakes take place each year due to the location of the country in the "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific Ocean where several tectonic plates meet. But I hope that nothing like this will happen soon.
