PM Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving PM; Global Leaders Extend Congratulations.

P rime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 12 years in office as Prime Minister of India. He first took oath as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014, and was re-elected in 2019 and again in 2024, becoming Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the longest-serving Prime Ministers in India.

Earlier, this record was held by Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as Prime Minister for 4,398 days. However, on 10 June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,399 days in office, becoming the longest-serving Prime Minister in India’s history and continuing to serve in that position.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 12-year journey as Prime Minister is as follows: his first term ran from 26 May 2014 to 2019 after the NDA’s victory. His second term lasted from 30 May 2019 to 2024. Following another NDA win in 2024, his third term began on 9 June 2024 and is currently ongoing in 2026.

The special point here is that Jawaharlal Nehru became Prime Minister on 15 August 1947, but from 1947 to May 1952 he served without a general election. Therefore, in the ‘elected tenure’ list, his initial 1,732 days are not included.

In this record, Prime Minister Narendra Modi now ranks first, having served from 26 May 2014 to the present (10 June 2026), completing 4,399 days in office so far, which is the longest tenure in this list and still ongoing.

Next comes Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as elected Prime Minister from 13 May 1952 to 27 May 1964, completing 4,398 days in office.

Indira Gandhi served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1984. In her first continuous term, she completed around 4,077 days in office, making her one of the longest-serving elected Prime Ministers of India.

In fourth place is Manmohan Singh, who served as Prime Minister from 22 May 2004 to 26 May 2014, completing 3,656 days in office as an elected Prime Minister.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee ranks fifth, serving between 1998 and 2004 with a total of two thousand two hundred fifty-six days in office.

Rajiv Gandhi ranks sixth, serving from 31 October 1984 to 2 December 1989, completing one thousand eight hundred fifty-eight days in office.

P. V. Narasimha Rao ranks seventh, serving from 21 June 1991 to 16 May 1996 and completing one thousand seven hundred ninety-one days in office.

Morarji Desai ranks eighth, serving from 24 March 1977 to 28 July 1979, completing eight hundred fifty-six days in office.

Lal Bahadur Shastri ranks ninth, serving from 9 June 1964 to 11 January 1966, completing five hundred eighty-one days in office.

V. P. Singh ranks tenth, serving from 2 December 1989 to 10 November 1990, completing three hundred forty-three days in office.
