In the Tamil Nadu elections, TVK emerged as the largest party, and its leader Vijay met the Governor to stake a claim to form the government.

Vijay has submitted a letter of support from the MLAs to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. His party has currently won 108 seats, which is still 10 seats short of a full majority.

In a follow-up development, TVK has reportedly sought support from the Tamil Nadu Congress.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress has confirmed that TVK has formally sought its support to form the government. In this election, Congress and DMK contested together, and Congress managed to win 5 seats.

The Congress has agreed to extend its support to TVK for forming the government. Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar said in a press release on Wednesday:
“Our support will be conditional, and it will be given only if TVK keeps away from those communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India.”

Even after Congress’ support, TVK still does not have a full majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. A total of 118 seats are required, but TVK has 108 seats and Congress has 5, taking the total to 113. The alliance is still short of 5 MLAs to reach the required majority.

The term of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will end on May 10, after which the process for forming a new Assembly will have to be completed.

In this election, the ruling DMK faced defeat and managed to win only 59 seats, while AIADMK secured 47 seats.

What did DMK say about Congress?

The main issue in this election is the lack of a clear majority in Tamil Nadu, as no party has been able to secure the required 118 seats needed for a simple majority in the state assembly.

In this election, TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, followed by DMK with 59 seats and AIADMK with 47 seats. Other parties also won a few remaining seats.

The Congress president in Tamil Nadu has extended support to TVK, after which DMK said that Congress has “stabbed them in the back” with this move.

This decision has surprised many people because Congress has been contesting elections alongside DMK, and both parties have been long-standing strong allies.
DMK is now openly opposing this move by Congress.

Speaking to PTI, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said that the Congress party has decided to ally with TVK and extend its support to it. He added that he feels they have “stabbed them in the back.”

DMK said that Congress has betrayed the people of Tamil Nadu by taking this step.

DMK spokesperson said, “They decided to form an alliance even before the ink on the Returning Officer’s victory certificate had dried.”

DMK spokesperson said, “We have supported Congress at every step, and our leader M.K. Stalin was the one who even projected Rahul Gandhi as a prime ministerial candidate.”
