The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded in 2026 (nomination). Author and poet Anne Carson from Canada was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2026 (as stated in the tweet sent by the Swedish Academy on Thursday, 8 October 2026).
The Academy commended her works that “through playful engagement with the classics have produced new forms within modern literature.” The award amounts to 12 million Swedish crowns, roughly $1.2 million.
"The almost entire body of her literary output consists of the point at which the philologist's fixation on words and the poet's search for new meanings come together," remarked Anders Olsson, Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
Simply put, a philologist is a person who is devoted to studying languages and old manuscripts. Her literary work is an amalgamation of the philologist's fixation with words and the poet's search for something new.
Carson is a well-experienced poet, essayist, classicist, and translator who is 76 years old. She has written poems, prose, and essays in which Greek mythology features significantly.
According to CNN, her unique style allows Carson to explore several different ideas, genres, and literary devices at the same time. Modern and ancient live together through her words.
In particular, the Nobel Prize Committee recognized the poem published in 1998, where Carson reworked the myth of Geryon, making him a “tender hero” obsessed with his mother, who falls for Heracles.
Other important works written by Carson include various translations of the classics of Greek literature as well as the performance art “Norma Jeane Baker of Troy,” states Rappler.
News of her winning the prize did not reach Carson in Stockholm. As per Ingrid Carlberg, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, she learned about her win while being in Iceland "listening to the wind."
According to bookmaker Ladbrokes, Carson was one of the favorites to clinch this year’s award, reports Reuters.
She becomes part of an illustrious list that features Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro, and Ernest Hemingway. However, the Nobel Prize in Literature tends to generate controversy within the literary circles, says Reuters.
CNN reports that she is the 19th woman out of 122 winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Carson was born in Toronto, Canada, on 21st June, 1950. In her biographical notes at Wikipedia, she has been involved in teaching classics, comparative literature, and creative writing at several universities in Canada and the US since 1979.
These include McGill University, the University of Michigan, New York University, and Princeton University.
She has authored over twenty books of poetry, prose, and translations.
Some of her awards are the MacArthur Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Lannan Literary Award, Griffin Poetry Prize (twice awarded), Princess of Asturias Award, and Order of Canada. According to CNN, she was the recipient of the T.S. Eliot Prize in 2001, which made her the first woman to receive the award.
As explained by Morocco World News, the Nobel Prize for Literature considers an author’s work as a whole and not just one particular book. This is appropriate for Carson since her literary career spans from poetry to essays and translations.
Carson will get the Nobel medal, diploma and prize money at the ceremony in Stockholm on December 10. The Nobel prizes go on with the peace prize, and then comes the economics prize next Monday.
